Building DHIS2 capacity by reaching tens of thousands of students from more than 100 countries through in-person and online learning.
The DHIS2 Academy empowers individuals and institutions worldwide to build the skills needed to manage and use data effectively. It extends worldwide, supporting the design, maintenance, and improvement of national health information systems that contribute to more timely, reliable data and stronger public health outcomes. More than 10,000 participants have joined in-person Academies in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Europe since 2011, while the DHIS2 Online Academy has reached over 52,000 unique learners from more than 175 countries, with a total of 88,000 course enrollments and 26,000 certificates issued—and counting!
This global community of DHIS2 learners includes Ministry of Health teams, NGOs, universities, and independent professionals who use DHIS2 to strengthen data systems and decision-making. Many Academy alumni have become trainers and mentors themselves, multiplying the impact through national programs and institutions.
Through both online and in-person learning, the Academy builds lasting capacity by combining global standards with local adaptation. Participants leave not just with technical skills but with practical experience applying DHIS2 tools in real contexts—designing indicators, building dashboards, and supporting interoperability across programs. DHIS2 Academy courses support a training-of-trainers model, where course participants can take the lessons learned and reuse and adapt course materials to cascade training throughout their organization or health system.
These efforts have helped Ministries of Health and partners transition from paper-based reporting to digital systems, improve data quality, and respond more rapidly to public health challenges.
“I’ve gone from data capture to analytics to customization and now configuration, and of course, the planning and budgeting skills. Wrapping everything together, picking concepts from each of those courses, has been really helpful.”
— George Mbevi, DHIS2 Academy graduate and data manager at KEMRI-Wellcome Trust
DHIS2 in-person Academy courses deliver intensive, hands-on learning supported by direct interaction, mentorship, and peer collaboration. This approach is especially effective for developing complex competencies that require practice, teamwork, and contextual problem-solving—such as Tracker configuration, system design, and integration across sectors.
In-person learning experiences include training workshops, mentorship programs, peer networks, and simulation-based sessions using live DHIS2 environments. These events foster regional collaboration, knowledge exchange, and cross-country partnerships that continue well beyond the training room.
The DHIS2 Online Academy complements in-person training by making expert-developed courses accessible to anyone, anywhere. Learners study at their own pace and apply new skills directly to DHIS2 implementations, supported by interactive exercises, videos, and community discussion. Our flagship online courses, the DHIS2 Fundamentals series, has been fully translated into French and Spanish, making these courses available to some of the largest DHIS2-using language communities.
With completion rates more than three times the global e-learning average and a satisfaction rate above 95%, the Online Academy has become a model for scalable, open learning in digital health. Leveraging online platforms is also a cost-effective way to reach a large and geographically diverse audience, with per student costs at a fraction of the cost of in-person training.
“Without these skills, it can be very hard to actually implement a DHIS2 program or project following the best practices.”
— Arnold Marowa, DHIS2 Academy graduate and systems support professional at HISP Zimbabwe
All DHIS2 Academy materials, both online and in-person, are free and open for anyone to use, adapt, and share. This openness allows Ministries, universities, and partners to localize training content and create sustainable national learning programs.
Examples such as the São Tomé and Príncipe hybrid initiative—where course videos were translated into Portuguese using AI tools and used in group workshops—show how open learning resources can overcome barriers of language and connectivity, expanding access to DHIS2 training in every context.
The Academy also supports ongoing professional development, enabling participants to stay up to date with new DHIS2 features, global standards, and innovations in digital public goods.
“I started writing articles about DHIS2, whether it’s integrating DHIS2 and Power BI, and how you can leverage those two platforms together. This helps my team in so many ways, because if there’s something they are struggling with, I can actually provide resources, and point them back to the DHIS2 Academy.”
— Mayamiko Mendamenda, DHIS2 Academy graduate and data analyst for the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia
The Academy’s learning model continues to evolve through research and collaboration led by the HISP Centre at the University of Oslo. Insights from Academy implementation inform new methods for digital learning, participatory design, and implementation research—linking hands-on practice with academic study.
Through our Master’s and PhD programs, we explore how digital learning, open resources, and peer collaboration can build sustainable capacity and support health system strengthening at scale.
