The September 2025 HISP Highlights post features the latest news, achievements, and updates from across our global HISP network.

30 Sep 2025 HISP: History, Work & Impact

From climate-health action and malaria control to education data and immunization, the HISP network marked a busy September. Highlights include DHIS2 Climate & Health presentations at Digital Health Africa and the Western Pacific Forum, contributions at the African Climate Summit and the Ifakara Conference, and coordination efforts in Ethiopia and Guinea’s new National Malaria Data Repository. On the ground, teams launched South Sudan’s Oral Cholera Vaccine dashboard, piloted Tanzania’s immunization registry app, advanced PreVBD modeling, shared DHIS2-Ed impacts from Uganda, and delivered trainings from St. Lucia to Nigeria. Events

Digital Health Africa 2025 Conference
Colleagues from the HISP Centre at the University of Oslo (HISP UiO) and HISP Uganda attended the Digital Health Africa 2025 Conference, hosted in both Berlin and Kampala. They shared presentations about the DHIS2 Climate & Health tools, which support rapid climate-health modeling at national scale. More

Western Pacific Action Forum on Climate-Resilient and Sustainable Health Systems
HISP Sri Lanka
team lead Dr. Pamod Amarakoon attended the Inaugural Western Pacific Action Forum on Climate-Resilient and Sustainable Health Systems in Singapore. Hosted by the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office and the Centre for Sustainable Medicine at the National University of Singapore, the Forum brings together leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region to shape a path toward health systems that protect communities from climate risks while cutting greenhouse gas emissions. More

African Climate Summit in Ethiopia
HISP Ethiopia
colleagues Melaeke Serawit and Bethlehem attended the second African Climate Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in September. Serawit contributed to a high-level roundtable discussion on advancing climate services for health in Africa, highlighting the impact of the HISP network and the DHIS2 platform for building scalable and climate-resilient systems. More

Ifakara Annual Scientific Conference
Dr. Wilfred Senyoni 
from HISP Tanzania presented at the Ifakara Annual Scientific Conference organized by the Ifakara Health Institute. In his presentation titled “Unlocking the Power of Connected Health: A Vision for Smart, Shared Data Infrastructure,” Senyoni shared how digital health systems and interoperable platforms can transform healthcare delivery. More

Regional Advisory Group Meeting in Ethiopia
HISP Ethiopia 
participated in a Regional Advisory Group meeting in Addis Ababa, with the City Administration Health Bureau, to align plans with partners working in the health information system landscape. The team presented ongoing initiatives with DHIS2 and identified areas of alignment for collaboration with others. More

National Malaria Control Workshop in Guinea
HISP West and Central Africa
(WCA) participated in a technical workshop hosted by the National Malaria Control Program, with support from WHO/AFRO and collaboration from the national health information system, marking the launch of Guinea’s National Malaria Data Repository (NMDR). HISP WCA joined other experts and implementers to share experiences using DHIS2 for health data management, offering Guinea many options to take full advantage of the NMDR. More

Training

Data Entry & Analytics Training in St. Lucia
HISP UiO
colleagues Enzo Rossi and Juan Manuel Alcántara Acosta facilitated a DHIS2 training on data entry and analytics in St. Lucia for health officials from Suriname, Barbados, St. Lucia, the British Virgin Islands, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. This workshop, facilitated with support from the Pan American Health Organization, the Caribbean Public Health Agency, and multiple partners, is part of a regional journey toward resilient, data-driven health systems capable of responding to influenza, COVID-19, and future pandemic threats. More

Data Visualization Academy in Mali
HISP Mali
and HISP UiO hosted a French-language DHIS2 Data Visualization Academy in Bamako, 15-19 September. Over the course of five days, 16 participants from across Africa—including Niger, the Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Mali, and Togo—joined 3 facilitators to dive into practical strategies for transforming raw health data into clear, accessible, and actionable insights. More

EMIS Training in Nigeria
HISP Nigeria
staff facilitated a core team training on the DHIS2-Ed platform in Nigeria, hosted by UNICEF Nigeria in collaboration with Nigeria’s Ministry of Education. The training included two cohorts of professionals from 11 states, and covered topics like the Android Data Capture App and the Data Upload Monitoring Dashboard App developed by HISP Nigeria. More

Impressions from DHIS2 Academy
HISP Rwanda 
has published video interviews with several staff members from the Zambia National Public Health Institute, capturing their experiences and impressions of the DHIS2 Academy on Data Visualization, hosted in Kigali. Discover how DHIS2 is transforming their daily work. More

Internal HISP Systems Management Training
HISP Ethiopia 
hosted an internal DHIS2 Systems Management Training to bring together 17 participants from various HISP groups, creating an opportunity for learning, collaboration and capacity building to support DHIS2 implementations. More

Partnership

Wellcome Trust Team Visits HISP UiO
The HISP Centre at the University of Oslo (HISP UiO) welcomed partners from the Wellcome Trust to Oslo for the annual investor meeting. During the visit, they took to opportunity to stop by the HISP UiO office to meet the DHIS2 Climate & Health team, talk about our work, and have some in-depth technical sessions on our technology, including the DHIS2 Climate App and Chap Modeling Platform. More

Cambodia Delegation Visits HISP Rwanda
Dr. Nhim Dina, 
Cambodia’s Cancer Registries Program country coordinator, visited HISP Rwanda along with several colleagues to discuss the DHIS2 Oncology Add-On Module. The Oncology Module is an important tool for strengthening cancer registries and advancing evidence-based public health programs. More

HISP Tanzania Meets with Norwegian Embassy
HISP Tanzania
Director Dr. Wilfred Senyoni visited the Norwegian Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to meet with Embassy staff and discuss the work that the group is doing to strengthen health information systems across the region. More

Implementation

South Sudan Launches Oral Cholera Vaccine Dashboard
The Ministry of Health of South Sudan, in collaboration with HISP Tanzania, has launched a new Oral Cholera Vaccine dashboard within its national health information system, powered by DHIS2. These dashboards allow health officials to visualize vaccination coverage across states and counties, track campaign performance in real time, strengthen preparedness and response, and promote data-driven coordination among national and subnational teams. More

DHIS2-Ed in Uganda
The International Development Research Council joint effort with the Global Partnership for Education, GPE KIX, has shared impacts from the DHIS2-Ed implementation in Uganda, in collaboration with HISP Uganda and led by the African Population and Health Research Center. “We wrote to the district with our learner and teacher numbers, showing the high pupil-teacher ratio. Based on the data, the district assigned us more teachers. Now we have 24.” More

PreVBC Dashboard Project
HISP Tanzania 
is working with research partners at the University of Dar es Salaam, the University of Copenhagen, the University of Gothenburg, and other partners to design Predicting Vector-Borne Disease (PreVBD) dashboards. This project aims to strengthen public health in Tanzania through sustainable forecasting of epidemic risks for malaria and dengue at local and national levels with DHIS2. More

Climate & Health Presentations
Colleagues from HISP Uganda, HISP Vietnam, Saudigitus (HISP Mozambique), HISP Sri Lanka, HISP Tanzania, and HISP West and Central Africa shared presentations about their work on the DHIS2 Climate & Health project during the DHIS2 Annual Conference in June, and those recordings are now available to view and share! More

HISP Tanzania Pilots Custom Immunization App
HISP Tanzania 
has officially launched the pilot of its new custom Tanzania Immunization Registry (TImR) app in select health facilities across Dar es Salaam, Mwanza and Morogoro. The pilot includes training for health workers and supervising the ongoing use of the system to ensure smooth adoption. More
