    Overview of the DHIS2 Academy Catalog

    This course catalog includes a short description of all of the DHIS2 Academy courses that are currently maintained by the HISP Centre at the University of Oslo. These include:

    • Self-paced online courses, which are available for enrollment at any time, free of charge, on the DHIS2 Online Academy website.
    • Instructor-led courses, which are primarily in-person and fee-based, and are conducted on a periodic basis by the HISP Centre and/or the groups in the global HISP network.

    The listings below indicate whether each course is self-paced or instructor-led, and include links to either the Online Academy for registration in self-paced courses, or our Academy schedule where upcoming instructor-led Academies are listed. Several of our courses are also available in translation — please see the Online Academy and Academy schedule page for our current offerings. In addition, you can explore our Academy Archive page for links to course material from previous editions of our instructor-led Academy courses.

    Our courses are organized in thematic categories based on their primary area of focus: DHIS2 Use, DHIS2 Configuration, Architecture & Extensions, and Domain & Program Management, plus special categories for the Introduction to DHIS2 course and DHIS2 Conferences. These are explained in more detail in their corresponding sections below. As of 2024, these categories replace our previous model of grouping Academies by level 1 and 2.

    Introduction to DHIS2

    Introduction to DHIS2 is our foundational online course that we recommend for all people who are interested in getting started with DHIS2, who want to refresh their knowledge, or who want to learn more about the larger history and community behind this open-source software project.

    In this course, you will learn about the fundamental concepts that underpin how DHIS2 works as an information system for data from a variety of sectors, and get an introduction to how data are entered, validated, analyzed, and shared in DHIS2.

    After completing this course, you’ll be able to:

    • Identify examples of the use of DHIS2 in public health and education programs.
    • Recognize how DHIS2 can be used to capture, analyze, and share data to make informed decisions.

    DHIS2 Use

    Courses within the DHIS2 Use category demonstrate and provide instruction on how the core system features within DHIS2 can be utilized. This may involve the utilization of a particular application within DHIS2 or the explanation of a more extensive set of procedures or features associated with DHIS2. These courses may also explore the functionality of supplementary tools in conjunction with specific DHIS2 features, particularly those courses that focus on the creation and management of reporting outputs.

    It’s important to note that DHIS2 Use courses do not provide instruction on how to carry out the majority of configuration tasks in DHIS2 — these are covered by the courses in the DHIS2 Configuration category.

    Aggregate Data Capture & Validation Fundamentals

    Self-paced online course

    In this course, you will learn to use DHIS2 for capturing and validating aggregate data using a web browser and an Android device, in both online and offline mode.

    After completing this course, you’ll be able to:

    • Identify the types of data you can enter into DHIS2
    • Enter data into DHIS2 using a web browser with the Data Entry app
    • Enter data into DHIS2 using an Android device with the DHIS2 Capture app
    • Enter data into DHIS2 while offline
    • Run a data validation test on your data
    • Complete a data set
    • Use the Data Quality app to run a batch validation test on aggregate data, check for outliers and check for data that is marked for follow-up

    Aggregate Data Analysis Fundamentals

    Self-paced online course

    In this course, you will learn to visualize data in DHIS2 and how to share your findings with other users, utilizing visualization tools such as pivot tables, maps, and charts. You will also learn how to combine these outputs in dashboards.

    After completing this course, you’ll be able to:

    • Select a visualization from the Data Visualizer app
    • Identify the steps to create and edit pivot tables and charts using the Data Visualizer app.
    • Identify the steps to create and edit a map using the Maps app.
    • Use dashboards to read, analyze and share data and interpretations.

    Visualizing Data in DHIS2

    Instructor-led, in-person course

    DHIS2 comes equipped with a variety of built-in tools for visualizing data that can help organize your information, such as pivot tables, charts, maps and other visualizations, which can then be presented in customizable dashboards and shared with others in your organization for collaborative analysis and decision making. Knowing how these tools work, and how to choose the most appropriate tools and visualizations based on the kind of data and needs of the audience, are key factors in managing successful information systems. The Visualizing Data in DHIS2 Academy builds upon the Aggregate Data Analysis Fundamentals course to provide you with the skills you need to use DHIS2 effectively to build reports, dashboards and design different outputs.

    By successfully completing this Academy you will:

    • Gain an understanding of the visualization tools in DHIS2, and create your own charts, tables, maps, and dashboards
    • Learn best practices for creating visualizations, including how to produce relevant information that is easy to interpret in DHIS2
    • Get an introduction to data quality tools within DHIS2

    Tracker Data Capture & Analysis Fundamentals

    Instructor-led, in-person course

    This course provides an overview of the key features of DHIS2 Tracker and how to use it in practice, focusing on how to input and analyze individual-level data. This Academy targets DHIS2 technical leads and implementation support personnel who work directly with Tracker programs.

    By successfully completing this Academy you will:

    • Gain an understanding of the Tracker data model and key DHIS2 features that support longitudinal individual-level data
    • Learn how to capture Tracker data on both Web and Android devices and supplementary apps
    • Learn how create analytical outputs and visualizations from Tracker data, including tables, charts, maps and dashboards.
    • Get an introduction to the latest tracker features

    Maps & Geographic Data

    Instructor-led, in-person course

    Maps are a powerful and popular data visualization tool that allow you to see where things are happening, to quickly discover variations between places, to see “patterns” in the data and to understand “spatial relationships” of public health. This Academy provides a detailed introduction to tools and techniques for mapping data using the DHIS2 Maps app, plus an introduction to how you can use external software with DHIS2 for expanded geographic data functionality.

    • Practical mapping exercises in a DHIS2 training instance

    Data Quality

    Self-paced online course

    In order to plan, monitor, evaluate, and strengthen health system performance and make evidence-informed decisions, you need reliable, high quality data. In this course, you will learn how to assess and improve data quality in DHIS2, and prepare the data for information and decision-making needs.

    Themes of this Academy include:

    • Overview of methods used for data quality review
    • Detailed instruction on installation, configuration, and use of the WHO Data Quality Tool
    • Exercises on validation rules, standard deviation, and predictors
    • Overview of using the WHO Data Quality App to conduct annual data quality review
    • Review of real-world data quality examples and country stories

    DHIS2 Configuration

    Configuration courses mainly focus on the setup, customization and/or maintenance of DHIS2. These courses also discuss the effect that configuration has on the utilization or implementation of specific features, and often require prior knowledge on how features that are being configured function in practice. As a result, these courses are often a hybrid of demonstrating how to perform specific maintenance operations in DHIS2 and discussing the best practices related to their implementation.

    Configuration courses focus on utilizing the maintenance application in DHIS2 to perform various system administration tasks. Extensions, scripts, apps or other tools that can be used to configure DHIS2 are not within the scope of the courses included in this category — some of these topics are covered by courses in the Architecture & Extensions category.

    Aggregate Customization Fundamentals

    In this course, you will learn to plan, design and create DHIS2 metadata used for capturing, storing and analyzing data, utilizing the Maintenance app to create organisation unit hierarchies, categories and category options, data elements, data sets and indicators based on best practices.

    After completing this course, you’ll be able to:

    • Design and create organisation units, org unit groups and org unit group sets.
    • Design and create category options, categories and category combinations to allow for disaggregated data analysis.
    • Design and create data elements, data element groups and data element group sets used for storing data and data analysis.
    • Design and create sectioned data sets for data capture, and how to configure sharing settings for them.
    • Design and create indicators, indicator groups and indicator group sets used to calculate aggregated data for powerful data analysis.

    Events Fundamentals

    This course focuses on working with individual-level (or case-based) data using the event data model in DHIS2, including capturing and analyzing event data and configuring event program data collection. It also includes an overview of how event programs relate to DHIS2 Tracker, which is used for longitudinal case-based data.

    By successfully completing this course, you will:

    • Learn about the Event data model in DHIS2, including how Event data can be collected
    • Gain an understanding of Event programs analytics applications by designing tables, data visualizations and maps
    • Become familiar with the process of customizing Event programs and demonstrate this understanding by creating an event program
    • Be introduced to Tracker programs and learn how they differ from Event programs

    Configuring Data Access & Outputs

    Getting good data analysis outputs from your DHIS2 system means starting with a good system design. DHIS2 is by nature a generic platform that can be customized based on the demands and components of a given program or organization. Creating and maintaining a high-quality DHIS2 instance that can provide useful outputs for data analysis and use requires mastering the components of system design, customization, administration and maintenance of metadata, applications to support the visualization of data, and other built-in and supplemental tools. This Academy builds on the Aggregate Customization Fundamentals course to provide you with the skills you need to successfully design, configure, and maintain your DHIS2 system for aggregate data collection, validation and analysis. Design of DHIS2 Tracker systems is covered in the Tracker Configuration Fundamentals Academy.

    By successfully completing this Academy you will:

    • Learn about best practice DHIS2 design, customization, and analytics principles
    • Learn how to configure DHIS2 components to better support data analysis

    Tracker Configuration Fundamentals

    Instructor-led, in-person course

    Tracker allows you to extend your DHIS2 system from aggregate to individual-level (or case-based data), which opens up new possibilities for using DHIS2 for patient management and more. A well designed Tracker system can lead not only to better data and better decisions, but also to streamlined clinical workflows. However, using Event and Tracker programs effectively requires special considerations for system configuration, data analysis, privacy, security, and other factors. This Academy covers the most important aspects of configuring and using DHIS2 tracker, and will provide you with the introductory skills you need to design, configure, and manage a Tracker program.

    By successfully completing this Academy you will:

    • Review best practices from live Tracker use cases
    • Learn about the DHIS2 Tracker data model and key Tracker terminology

    Android Configuration Fundamentals

    The DHIS2 Android Capture app supports the collection of DHIS2 on mobile phones and tablets, including in offline mode in areas with limited internet access. This course provides best practices and lessons learned from DHIS2 Android implementations and will guide you through approaches to configuration that are applicable across various projects.

    By successfully completing this Academy you will learn how to:

    • Collect and visualize data with an Android mobile device for Aggregate,
      Event and Tracker programs
    • Modify metadata to work well in the Android app, including use of colors, icons, maps and
      relationships, plus other Android specific settings
    • Understand the implications of using Android in an implementation from several points of view
      (testing, training, security, deployment, etc.)

    Domain & Program Management

    In this category we focus on two connected areas. Within domain management, the application of specific workflows, tools, and best practices are used to illustrate how DHIS2 can function as an information system within particular domains or sectors. These courses focus on presenting concepts related to both configuration and utilization within these specific domains.

    Within program management, courses shift their focus to the long term sustainability of DHIS2 systems. Instead of discussing specific principles related to the usage or configuration of DHIS2, these courses focus on strategic aspects, including the planning, budgeting, scaling up and evaluation of DHIS2 implementations. These courses do not demand an in-depth understanding of DHIS2 and are designed for individuals in roles capable of influencing the long-term vision and planning of a DHIS2 implementation within their country or organization.

    Planning & Budgeting DHIS2 Implementations

    The countrywide rollout of DHIS2 is a task that requires a lot of resources, highly skilled personnel, and stakeholder engagement, with a number of different elements that must be planned and budgeted for. To help make this process easier, we have combined our knowledge gained from the experience of implementing DHIS2 in many countries and contexts to provide a series of critical topics, recommendations, lessons learned, and best practices together in one place.

    Themes of this Academy include:

    • Identifying the main DHIS2 features that support its use as an HMIS.
    • Distinguishing the roles and responsibilities of the DHIS2 teams that guarantee the system’s governance, sustainability, and relevance.
    • Identifying the main activities and best practices when planning and budgeting for large-scale DHIS2 implementations.

    Android Implementation

    Mobile implementation is a complex task. The DHIS2 Android Capture App offers a mobile solution for capture of aggregate and Tracker/Event data on Android devices that functions in both online and offline mode. During this Academy, you will explore all the functionalities and key aspects for a successful configuration of the DHIS2 Android app and associated DHIS2 server to guarantee the best user experience for the front-line worker. The facilitators will share best practices and lessons learned from existing DHIS2 Android implementations, and will guide you through approaches that are applicable across various projects.

    • How to plan, test, pilot and scale DHIS2 Android systems.

    Tracker Implementation Management

    Instructor-led, in-person course

    Using Tracker to add individual-level data to DHIS2 allows you to enhance your data analysis and potentially streamline processes at the point of care, but it also adds to the complexity of your DHIS2 system. This Academy will help you prepare and plan for your Tracker projects, to give you a better understanding of how to perform internal readiness assessments, navigate legislation and policy concerns, set up and train your core team, and build a long-term implementation plan. The goal for the Academy is for each participant to leave with a framework for how to assess and plan their Tracker project.

    Themes of this Academy include:

    • Review Tracker features and real-world use cases
    • Overview of how to design implementations for high-quality analytics outputs
    • Discuss strategies for capacity building

    Implementing Information Systems

    This course provides you with tools to understand the benefits of a holistic information system and how DHIS2 can be utilized to implement a routine information system in practice.

    During this course, you will:

    • Identify the different types of routine data that contribute to a holistic information system and discuss how this data can be captured and analyzed in DHIS2.
    • Discuss implementation considerations including planning and budgeting, mobile deployment, security and capacity building.
    • Identify frameworks for assessing your system and developing long-term work plans.

    Community Health Information Systems

    Instructor-led, in-person course

    Building a Community Health Information System (CHIS) is a complex task. This Academy serves as a practical guide for national and local-decision makers involved in the design, planning, deployment, governance and scale up of successful DHIS2-based CHIS that supports community health workers and the communities they work in. This guidance covers the full information cycle, including data collection, analysis, dissemination and data-driven decision making for improved and equitable community-based health services. It is applicable both to countries that are just beginning the design process as well as those with existing systems that are being strengthened, scaled up or integrated with other information systems.

    Themes of this Academy include:

    • Introduction foundational concepts of CHIS
    • Review of real-world DHIS2 CHIS case studies
    • Presentation of key considerations of design, development and use of large-scale CHIS, and guidelines on configuring DHIS2 as a CHIS
    • Practical exercises on different facets of building a CHIS, including monitoring of integrated community case management (iCCM)
    • Discussion on data use and decision making
    • Discussion of CHIS capacity strengthening plans
    • Guidance on governance and sustainability of CHIS, including issues of participation, accountability and transparency and development of standard operating procedures

    DHIS2 for Education

    Instructor-led, in-person course

    While DHIS2 has historically been used for collecting and analyzing health information, an increasing number of countries have begun to deploy DHIS2 as an Education Management Information System (EMIS). This Academy offers an introduction to the application of DHIS2 software as an EMIS. The course includes conference-style sessions for education system stakeholders and program managers that offer an overview of the system, review of real-world use cases and demos, discussions of standards for EMIS data, and review of key planning, management and evaluation considerations. It also includes technical sessions that offer practical trainings and hands-on exercises to facilitate the implementation of a DHIS2 for Education instance, including aggregate and individual-level (Tracker) data, and design implications for analytics and mobile data collection with Android devices.

    Themes of this Academy include:

    • Review of real-world uses of DHIS2 for Education, focusing on best practices and lessons
    • Key considerations for implementing DHIS2 as an EMIS
    • Introduction to analysis of EMIS data (such as school attendance, etc.) using DHIS2 analytics tools, including pivot tables, charts and maps
    • Creating custom dashboards for easy data sharing, presentation, and use
    • Introduction to customizing EMIS data entry forms
    • Introduction to designing data capture tools to track individual-level data, such as student and teacher attendance

    DHIS2 for Logistics

    Instructor-led, in-person course

    As DHIS2 implementations mature and involve more aspects of country health systems, there has been increasing interest in using DHIS2 for health commodity data, either as part of a unified data system or as a standalone Logistics Management Information System (LMIS). This Academy focused on how we can use DHIS2 to better manage health commodity availability. This involves improved stock management at community and facility level, and the use of service data and logistics data to improve availability and reduce bottlenecks. The course will present options for using DHIS2 to collect logistics data, as well as options for interoperability with other existing systems.

    Themes of this Academy include:

    • Review of supply chain data flow models, terminology and meta-data
    • Introduction to supply chain indicator calculations in DHIS2
      Introduction to supply chain analytics configuration in DHIS2
    • Visualizing supply chain data and comparing service data to supply data
    • Discussion on interoperability between DHIS2 and other eLMIS systems

    Architecture & Extensions

    The architecture & extensions category focuses on a variety of supplementary processes and tools that support a DHIS2 implementation. These courses represent the most IT-centric aspects within the DHIS2 curriculum, requiring prior skills and experience in a diverse range of IT processes for successful completion. These courses are not designed for those seeking foundational DHIS2 knowledge. Instead, they cater to those tasked with overseeing specific infrastructure requirements or developing and sustaining workflows and tools that complement the existing functionality of DHIS2.

    Server Administration

    Instructor-led, in-person course

    The performance and stability of your DHIS2 system depends in large part on your server configuration. During this Academy you will develop a range of skills and gain knowledge of possible approaches required to install and maintain the DHIS2 software in a variety of country settings. The course facilitators will share best practices and real-world experiences, and guide you through practical exercises to help optimize your server configuration. Note: All practical work will be done on the Ubuntu server linux distribution.

    Themes of this Academy include:

    • Essentials of linux server administration, including use of ssh for access and unix fundamentals
    • Overview of DHIS2 architecture, including its dependencies and installation options
    • Overview of various logging, monitoring and alerting tools
    • Overview of security concerns, concepts, standards, and technical tools (including special concerns for personal data in Tracker programs)
    • Discussions on “next generation” features of DHIS2 and their implications for server administration

    Prerequisite: Prior experience doing server-related back-end work and proficiency with linux are required.

    System Management

    Instructor-led, in-person course

    Learn advanced configuration concepts and principles that are required to manage DHIS2 at scale. This includes importing metadata and data, managing users and identifying and implementing best practices for maintaining a robust system over time.

    After taking this course, you will be able to:

    • Identify key skills required within a DHIS2 technical implementer role
    • Design routines for managing user access at scale
    • Design processes to support the import of metadata
    • Design processes to support the import of data
    • Create processes for syncing metadata between multiple DHIS2 instances

    Android App Development

    Instructor-led, in-person course

    While the DHIS2 Android Capture App provides a flexible, generic data capture solution, sometimes local requirements or program specifications mean that a custom mobile app is the best solution. The DHIS2 Android SDK is designed to accelerate development of customized Android Apps that offer offline support and easy integration with DHIS2 using a standardized toolkit. This Academy is a bootcamp on the DHIS2 Android SDK, focused on how to build an app on top of the SDK and how to consume its modules and repositories.

    Themes of this Academy include:

    • DHIS2 Android SDK architecture
    • DHIS2 skeleton app
    • Principles for UX/UI design
    • DHIS2 rule and indicator engine
    • Testing and debugging
    • Publication channels

    Prerequisite: Prior app development experience and proficiency with Java are required.

    Web App Development

    Instructor-led, in-person course

    The DHIS2 core software provides a suite of built-in tools and applications for data capture and analysis, as well as the flexibility to extend the platform’s functionality with custom apps that can be publicly shared with the DHIS2 community. During this Academy, you will learn the basics of DHIS2 Web App development, testing and deployment using the DHIS2 Application Platform. You will also learn about key topics for developing DHIS2 Apps, such as the DHIS2 design system and user interface libraries and the DHIS2 REST API, and review as examples of full-featured applications utilizing various features of the platform, and get hands-on experience building a DHIS2 web app.

    Themes of this Academy include:

    • Best practices for developing modern DHIS2 web apps
    • Working with DHIS2 Metadata and Analytics APIs
    • Building DHIS2 apps with the new DHIS2 Application Platform
    • Using the DHIS2 design system and UI libraries
    • Deployment of DHIS2 apps to the app store

    Prerequisite: Prior software development experience and proficiency with Javascript is required and familiarity with React is recommended.

    Integration & Interoperability with DHIS2

    Instructor-led, in-person course

    The purpose of this specialized Academy on integration and interoperability is to provide an in-depth knowledge and promote good practices when it comes to connecting DHIS2 and other systems, as well as to review integration tools and share real-world experiences.

    Themes of this Academy include:

    • Integration patterns and principles
    • Interoperability, standards and architecture
    • DHIS2 data model and API
    • DHIS2 integration toolchain: Java SDK, Apache Camel component, etc.

    Conferences

    DHIS2 Conferences bring together experts and stakeholders from across a region or around the world for presentations, discussions, networking, and strengthening connections between the DHIS2 core team, the HISP network, and the global DHIS2 community.     DHIS2 Annual Conference

    In-person event, with options for online participation

    The DHIS2 Annual Conference is our biggest yearly event, and provides an opportunity for the global DHIS2 community — a diverse group including implementers, developers, ministry representatives, technical partners, donors, and other DHIS2 experts from around the world — to meet and share experiences with DHIS2, learn about the latest developments and innovations, and make connections that can lead to new partnerships and collaborations. This conference is held in June each year in Norway, where it is hosted by the HISP Centre at the University of Oslo.

    Features of the DHIS2 Annual Conference include:

    • Presentations of new and upcoming features from the DHIS2 core development team
    • Speakers from national Ministries of Health and global public health partners such as WHO, the CDC, and more
    • Community-driven presentations selected from an open call for presentation topics
    • Annual competition for best independent Web and Android App developed by the DHIS2 community
    • Ample opportunities to network with peers and experienced DHIS2 implementers

    Note: Academy certificates are not awarded for attending the Annual Conference, as this is not primarily a training event.

    Regional DHIS2 Conference

    In-person event

    Regional DHIS2 conferences are a place for members of the DHIS2 community in a specific region — such as Asia-Pacific or Africa — to meet and share experiences about DHIS2, learn about the latest developments and innovations, and make connections that can lead to new partnerships and collaborations. These conferences are organized and hosted on a periodic basis by regional HISP hubs in the HISP network.

    Features of the regional DHIS2 conferences include:

    • Presentations of new and upcoming features from HISP group experts and the DHIS2 core team
    • Speakers from national Ministries of Health and regional public health organizations
    • Presentations by representatives from participating countries
    • Ample opportunities to network with peers and experienced DHIS2 implementers
