The August 2025 HISP Highlights post features the latest news, achievements, and updates from across our global HISP network.
From air quality and climate-health modeling to immunization, supply chains, and surveillance, the HISP network kept advancing open, data-driven health systems in August. Highlights include Rwanda’s rollout of revised Case-Based Surveillance, Ethiopia’s new GEOHealth air-quality collaboration, progress on Comoros’ eLMIS, and climate-informed malaria forecasting in Tanzania. We also share takeaways from MedInfo 2025, a webinar on digital microplanning, new research on DHIS2 as a digital public good, expanded partnership in Somalia, and hands-on academies across Sri Lanka, Nepal, Rwanda, and Niger. Implementation
Case-Based Surveillance Rollout in Rwanda
HISP Rwanda, in collaboration with Rwanda Biomedical Centre and the World Health Organization, is spearheading the rollout of revised Case-Based Surveillance (CBS) tools across 17 districts in Rwanda. In August, the team conducted four-day training sessions in Bugesera, Nyanza, Rubavu, and Rwamagana to build a strong pool of national and subnational trainers. More
Air Quality Monitoring in Ethiopia
HISP Ethiopia participated in the launch of the new Air Quality Monitoring BAM of the GEOHealth Project at Addis Ababa University. This event marked an exciting step toward collaboration between HISP Ethiopia and GEOHealth. HISP Ethiopia is working on linking Climate data with health risks through DHIS2 Climate & Health initiatives with the HISP Centre at the University of Oslo (HISP UiO). Through this pilot, we aim to strengthen evidence-based decision-making and build climate-resilient health systems for Ethiopia. More
Comoros eLMIS Implementation
HISP Rwanda participated in an evaluation meeting with the Secretary General of the Ministry of Health in the Comoros and other stakeholders, regarding its eLMIS project, which is implemented with partners from the HISP Centre at the University of Oslo (HISP UiO) and the mSupply Foundation, and funded by the World Bank. Climate & Health Modeling Tools
HISP Tanzania has been pioneering the use of DHIS2 climate health modeling tools, in collaboration with Ifakara Health Institute and other partners. These tools forecast malaria cases by combining climate and health data, while also integrating local insights from the Tanzania Meteorological Authority. Early results show significant potential in strengthening malaria surveillance and resource planning. More

MedInfo 2025 Conference in Taipei
Pamod Amarakoon, HISP Sri Lanka team lead, represented the HISP network at the 2025 MedInfo conference in Taipei and presented a poster, “Leveraging Open-Source Technologies for Climate-Health Data Integration: Towards Digital Public Goods in LMICs,” co-authored with colleagues from the HISP Centre at University of Oslo. Microplanning Webinar
On 25 August, HISP Rwanda and partners from the Ministry of Health of the Central African Republic (CAR), and the Gates Foundation hosted a webinar on the digital transformation of routine immunization microplanning in the CAR. More

New Research about Digital Public Goods
A new article published by researchers from the HISP Centre at the University of Oslo (HISP UiO), explores DHIS2’s role as a digital public good during the COVID-19 pandemic, revealing how the platform fostered distributed and recursive innovation across communities worldwide. More
UNICEF and HISP UiO Expand Somalia Partnership
HISP UiO and UNICEF have signed a new three-year agreement to strengthen Somalia’s DHIS2-based health management information system. The collaboration builds on a successful partnership from 2020 to 2023, which supported the initial deployment of DHIS2 in Somalia’s health sector, and will be implemented with the support of regional partner HISP Tanzania. Comoros Secretary General of Health visits HISP Rwanda
Soudjay Mohamed, Secretary General of the Comoros Ministry of Health and Social Protection, was welcomed to the HISP Rwanda offices for a visit in August. He met with team members from several key departments, praised the strong collaboration between the ministry and HISP Rwanda, and concluded his tour with meeting with the Permanent Secretary of Rwanda’s Ministry of Health. DHIS2 Server Administration Academy in Sri Lanka
HISP UiO, HISP Asia and HISP Sri Lanka organized the five-day DHIS2 Server Administration Academy in Colombo, which delved into Linux server administration, DHIS2 architecture, security, monitoring, next-generation features, and more. More
DHIS2 Design & Customization Training in Nepal
HISP India conducted a five-day training on DHIS2 design and customization for members of the Nepal Ministry of Health, to strengthen the technical capacity of government stakeholders in configuring and managing DHIS2 for improved data collection, analysis and use. More
Data Visualization Academy in Kigali
HISP Rwanda and HISP UiO hosted a five-day Academy in Kigali, 11-15 August, welcoming implementers, data managers, and M&E team leads from several African countries. Participants practiced creating pivot tables, charts, maps, and dashboards, and used the Interpretations feature to enhance data use for decision-making. More
Case-Based Surveillance Training
HISP West and Central Africa conducted training for more than 100 trainers in Niger, as part of the ongoing deployment of the DHIS2 Tracker module for disease monitoring, with Niger’s Ministry of Health. More
Electronic Immunization Tracker Video Tutorial
HISP Rwanda has created and shared a video tutorial for anyone supporting Rwanda’s immunization program, detailing step-by-step guidance for recording vaccination data using the Electronic Immunization Tracker (EIT) a key tool used at health facilities to ensure accurate reporting and effective follow-up for children receiving vaccines. More
