Guinea Bissau is integrating climate data and predictive modeling capabilities into existing DHIS2 systems for enhanced malaria early warning to support more timely and targeted interventions and exploring innovative solutions for additional climate-health priorities.
DHIS2 Climate & Health work in Guinea Bissau is currently focused on improving malaria early warning through collaboration between the Ministry of Health (MoH), National Malaria Control Programme, and Saudigitus (HISP Mozambique), with catalytic support from the Global Fund. It builds on existing locally owned DHIS2 systems while leveraging DHIS2 Climate & Health tools for data integration and predictive modeling. plus local innovations. In addition, Saudigitus is working with the Unicef country office to explore applications of these tools in other priority health programs, specifically for waterborne diseases with Unicef-led WASH initiatives.

Guinea Bissau’s Ministry of Health, along with IBAP, UNDP, WHO, UNICEF and other local stakeholders, have identified several initial focus area for piloting DHIS2 climate & health systems:
DHIS2 Climate & Health work in Guinea Bissau builds on existing DHIS2 infrastructure and capacity, while leveraging innovative DHIS2 tools for climate data integration and predictive modeling.
DHIS2 has been used as Guinea Bissau’s national health management information system (HMIS) since 2013, covering routine data on a range of health programs. DHIS2 is also used in Guinea Bissau for disease surveillance, and for planning and management of ITN campaigns for malaria prevention.
The country also uses DHIS2 Tracker programs for electronic registries for maternal and child health and immunization programmes, which could be used as a basis for the Extreme Heat & Perinatal Health Monitoring Module use case. Unicef also runs a major WASH program in Guinea Bissau that uses mWater for data management, with around 2,500 community health workers entering data via tablets–this system could be enhanced and data integrated into DHIS2 to support the WASH-Climate Integration for Diarrhea Outbreak Prevention use case.
The DHIS2 Climate App has been installed in a DHIS2 testing instance in Guinea Bissau, enabling local stakeholders to explore the integration of climate data at health facility catchment area level and HMIS data in DHIS2. Temperature, relative humidity, heat stress and precipitation data are currently being drawn from globally available data sets, including ERA-5 Land.
Saudigitus has installed the Chap Modeling Platform and DHIS2 Modeling App on a DHIS2 testing instance in Guinea Bissau to facilitate the exploration of local climate-health use cases.
Guinea Bissau has an evolving policy landscape for climate and health that is supported by a network of partners.
Guinea Bissau has been engaged in the process of developing a National Adaptation Plan (NAP) from 2022-2026. Saudugitus is engaged with the MoH on drafting the health chapter for this document. The country has published supporting policy documents, such as the Fourth National Communication (NC4) from 2025, that outline high-level public health priorities, including malaria and WASH.
DHIS2 climate and health work in Guinea Bissau is a collaboration between the Ministry of Health (MoH), National Malaria Control Programme, National Institute of Public Health (INASA), WHO, Unicef, UNDP, the Institute of Biodiversity and Protected Areas (IBAP), Saudigitus, and other local stakeholders.
Catalytic funding for initial work on DHIS2 climate and health systems in Guinea Bissau has been provided by the Global Fund. It builds on globally available DHIS2 tools developed through the Wellcome-funded DHIS2 for Climate & Health project. Saudigitus is working with local stakeholders to source funding for additional climate and health initiatives.
